Mr. Benard Otabil, Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, explained the purpose of the workshop during a media engagement.

He emphasized that the workshop aims to equip the media with knowledge about the Bank of Ghana’s operations, enabling them to deliver accurate reports to the public.

“A journalist is only as good as his or her understanding of the subject that he or she is reporting on. So, we are here to provide you with the training as what we do as a central bank, the key element in the work that we do, and most especially, the monetary policy report that we do every other month.”

Mr. Benard Otabil highlighted instances where the media has inaccurately reported on certain topics due to a lack of understanding of the subject matter. Therefore, the workshop would equip the media to give accurate finance reports.

Responding to a question by a journalist on inflation, Mr. Otabil describes inflation as an armed robber. “I did allude to the fact that inflation is an armed robber.” “It robs you of your savings. It takes money out of your pocket even if you don’t realize it.”

If prices of goods keep going up every day, it makes it difficult for you to plan, says Mr. Benard Otabil.

Engaging with the media, Mr. Agbaxode expressed his gratitude to the BOG for organizing the workshop. “So, for us receiving the leaders of the BOG to bring us together for this workshop let me just commend them for what they have done.”

He added that journalists will be seeking more workshops from the Bank of Ghana. “They should have constant engagement with the media so that we can also be able to interpret and report this monetary policy to go a long way to bring the fortunes of this country forward.”

The GJA Chairman for Volta/Oti urged journalists who did not attend the workshop to learn from their colleagues. “Let me also encourage other practitioners, for you not having the opportunity to be here that does not mean that you shouldn’t learn the monetary policy. You should always be open to be able to learn from colleagues.”
