Ho GPRTU Former Executives Refuse to Leave Office
A violent confrontation is unfolding at the Volta Regional Secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) as former executives of Ho Branch 2 resist a smooth transition of leadership.
The former executives, led by Chairman Michael Sonkro, have refused to vacate their positions for over two years, despite the election of new leadership.
The situation escalated earlier today when a team sent by the NEC to remove the old executives from office clashed with several individuals, including former 2nd Trustee Felix Kpor, who attempted to block their access to the offices.
The confrontation quickly turned chaotic, prompting the intervention of police officers.
The parties involved are now in discussions with the Volta Regional Police Command to find a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
The conflict dates back to April 2022, when former executives, who had been accused of exceeding their four-year term by 11 years, faced growing unrest from union members.
After a long period of agitation, an election was finally held and supervised by the NEC, resulting in the defeat of the former executives. They later rejected the election results and refused to handover to the newly elected executives.
Despite several court actions and repeated directives from the NEC, the former officers remained defiant, prompting the NEC to dismiss them in December 2023, citing Article 3(b) of the GPRTU constitution, which mandates that all members adhere to the union’s constitution, policies, and directives.
In October 2024, the NEC decided to take further action to remove the former executives from office and formally induct the new leadership into their positions.
The ongoing standoff remains unresolved as both sides continue to seek a way forward.
