Parliamentary Health Committee Commends Ho Teaching Hospital

This is part of the ongoing four-day tour of regional and teaching hospitals across the country to evaluate their current status, identify challenges, and develop strategies for improved healthcare delivery.

The delegation included the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agotime-Ziope, Hon. Charles Agbeve, MP for Keta, Hon. Dzidzorli Gakpe, and MP for Central Tongu, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze.

During their visit, they praised the hospital’s management for their impressive work, particularly the establishment of a dialysis center and a 24-hour pharmacy.

Speaking to the media, Central Tongu MP, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze commended the hospital management for maintaining high standards and improving healthcare services. He emphasized the committee’s commitment to supporting government hospitals financially to enhance service delivery across the country.

Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze, Managing Director of the Parliamentary Health Committee, noted the importance of visiting hospitals to inspect ongoing projects, ensuring they meet patient needs.

He highlighted the achievements of Ho Teaching Hospital, including the establishment of a dialysis center, a 24-hour pharmacy, and the efficient management of resources to maintain equipment such as CT scanners.

Hon. Hottordze also raised concerns about the lack of savings into the Consolidated Fund, promising to address the issue in Parliament.

He further applauded corporate contributions, citing MTN’s ongoing expansion of the hospital’s accident and emergency center, and called on more institutions to support healthcare infrastructure.

He also revealed that the Korean government plans to build an additional hospital facility to further boost healthcare delivery in the region.

Hon. Hottordze encouraged healthcare workers at Ho Teaching Hospital to continue their dedication and take good care of the hospital’s resources.

During the media engagement, Dr. John Tampouri, Managing Director of Ho Teaching Hospital, outlined the need for a strong tertiary healthcare policy in Ghana.

He emphasized that such a policy would streamline the development of equipment, infrastructure, and human resources necessary to boost local healthcare and reduce referrals abroad, ultimately strengthening the nation’s economy.

He advocated for collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs, and Tourism to foster health tourism initiatives.

Dr. Thomas Anaaba, another member of the Health Committee, expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s achievements, particularly their infrastructure development and research efforts.

He revealed that Ho Teaching Hospital had published 21 peer-reviewed studies last year and is currently financing the training of about 50 specialists at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

However, he identified human resource challenges and the lack of a dedicated ambulance for the hospital as pressing issues.

He recommended that all regional and teaching hospitals be equipped with their own ambulances to ensure timely patient transfers.

The visit concluded with the committee pledging to incorporate the hospital’s challenges and successes into their parliamentary report and make the necessary recommendations to support further growth and improvement.
