President Mahama Revokes Appointments of MMDCEs and Assembly Members
President John Mahama has revoked the appointments of MMDCEs and Assembly Members, effective immediately.
Accra, January 8, 2025 – In a significant political move, President John Dramani Mahama has exercised his authority under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), to revoke the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as well as Assembly Members appointed under the relevant sections of the Act.
The announcement was communicated in an official letter from the Office of the President, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama. According to the letter, the revocation of these appointments takes immediate effect.
The directive has tasked the respective Coordinating Directors of the affected assemblies to step into the roles of acting Chief Executives until new substantive appointments are made. This measure ensures the continuous administration and management of the assemblies during the transition period.
The letter, addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, underscores the President’s commitment to restructuring local governance and ensuring compliance with the provisions of the law.
The decision comes amid growing expectations for reforms in local governance to enhance efficiency and accountability at the grassroots level. Analysts suggest this move is part of a broader effort by President Mahama to reshape his administration’s approach to decentralization and local governance.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development is expected to oversee the transition process and ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities. New substantive appointments are anticipated in the coming weeks, pending further announcements from the Office of the President.
This development signals a decisive start to the year for the Mahama administration, as it moves to strengthen governance structures across the country.
